Texas Hold’em is the most popular poker style played in the United States today. From having its own online craze, to backyard BBQ’s with friendly tournaments to having million dollar games televised almost every weekend. This seems to be a fad that will persevere time poker idn.
Little is know as to the exact origin of the game, but Texas State Legislature officially recognizes Robstown Texas as the official birthplace of Texas Hold’em. That was somewhere in the early 1900’s. It did not make its way to Vegas until 1967 brought it to the Golden Nugget Casino. The game was exclusive to the Nugget until the game ventured out to the Dunes Casino.
In 1969, the 2nd annual Gambling Fraternity Convention held the first ever poker tournament which featured several Texas Hold’em games. In 1970, Jack and Benny Binion bought the rights to the convention and renamed to what we know it as today, the World Series of Poker. The WSP then moved it location to the Horseshoe Casino.
Over the next few years the event grew and grew. After a slight name change in 1972 to, no-limit Texas Hold’em, it has not change to this day. From 8 players in 1972, 100 players in 1982 and 200 players in 1991 the games popularity now has exploded beyond all expectation. Just last year in 2006, Jamie Gold was crowned a poker champion when he took first place at the World Series of no-limit Texas Hold’em. His winnings of 12 million dollars is proof of no-limit. That was from a 10 thousand dollar buy in.
So can you win? Yes, you can. Poker is a game of strategy, chance, skill and luck. There is so many people that have played for the first time and have walked away winners. Granted, you may not find your self playing in a 10 thousand dollar buy in game, maybe a 20 dollar buy in game. With 8 people playing that is, 20 back to the runner up and 140 to you. It pays to win Even the smaller pots pay off. Look at the numbers that I just set up for you. You go to the party with 20 in you pocket. You leave with 140. That is a 120 profit. What if you guys play 3 games at the same ante? When you leave, you will have your original 20 dollars and an extra 360.
You can play on line for money. Granted it is a little more intimidating because you can’t see your opponents face to see if they are bluffing, but there is still strategy involved. You need to start learning this great game. Chris Moneymaker learned it. He won a 39 dollar seat into the main event at the World Series of Poker from an online satellite tournament. Later that year, he won 2.5 million from that 39 dollar seat. It pays to play.
So where so you learn? Well, the internet has a lot of places. I suggest checking out a lot of sources. Your local library will have a lot of books on it. Eventually you will buy an e-book of line to look into people tips and tricks. I really recommend you do this. There are books out there for a few dollars. Get them, try them. These authors have been playing for years and no some things that you did not know. Even if you have been playing for years, you will learn something from these guys. I guarantee it.
